How to read these records
The license
An agency or business needs a Texas license to sell insurance or adjust property and casualty claims in the state. One agency can hold several licenses (general lines, life, surplus lines, title…); each has its own number, qualification, issue date and expiration date. The file published on Oct 1, 2026 lists the licenses in force.
The appointment
An appointment is an insurer's formal designation of an agency to represent it. The file lists active appointments only, with the date each became active. An agency without a listed appointment is not necessarily unable to place business: some licenses do not need one, and the file is a snapshot.
NPN and EIN
The NPN (National Producer Number) is assigned by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and identifies the agency across states; this site uses it as the record key. The EIN is the federal employer number the appointment file publishes for each agency.
What is not here
Individual agents and adjusters — the Texas Department of Insurance publishes them in a separate file, which this site does not use. Agencies named after a person are searchable but not listed on any page.
